Re-Enlivening the Annual Meeting

Like many community-run organisations, the Geelong Landcare Network has struggled to get people to attend the Annual General Meeting. The AGM was the one time of year when we invited the broader landcare community and stakeholders to join us. A few years ago, we decided to change things by splitting the annual meeting into two separate events - an AGM and an annual get-together. It proved to be a simple but very effective approach.

The AGM is now a short, focused meeting, dealing purely with the business that is required to be dealt with at an AGM. On a different date we hold an annual get-together where we launch our Annual Report. The main focus of the evening is a review and celebration of the year’s activities, a special guest speaker, and supper. Since we made this change, the annual celebration has drawn a large gathering. These evenings have been highly sociable and successful, and have connected up people from across the region and across organisations. A few essential ingredients have also contributed:

  • making personal contact when inviting people to come along
  • the quality and talent of the guest speakers that we’ve been lucky enough to host
  • good hospitality (comfortable, interesting venues and a yummy supper).
