The Bass Coast Landcare Network’s Powlett Project connects five Landcare groups in the network and utilises support from the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority and a major corporate energy sponsor Ngeie.
The Powlett project pioneered innovative corporate sponsorship which involved getting the staff out on team building days and showing the companies what they could do with their sponsorship dollars and offering a reward for their staff. Then Landcare Australia Limited’s Rob Youl (now President of Australian Landcare International) was the driver of the first large corporate sponsorship through BHP.
The Powlett Project is able to function alongside the WGCMA’s willow removal program where the Project is able to supply trees and fencing for the participating Landcare groups.
The network is able to apply for large regional grants that have a catchment wide response and, working together, it connects up and revegetates creeklines and gullies across multiple Landcare group boundaries.
